The Enhanced Patient Care Technician (EPCT) Program at PREU POLYTECH has been carefully designed to prepare compassionate, competent, and highly skilled healthcare professionals who are ready to meet the growing demands of modern healthcare. Delivered in collaboration with the University of the West Indies Short Term Advancement and Resource Centre (UWISTAR), this comprehensive program combines academic excellence, practical laboratory training, and supervised clinical experience to develop graduates who are confident, professional, and workforce ready.

As healthcare systems continue to evolve, there is an increasing need for multi-skilled patient care technicians who can provide direct patient support while working alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The EPCT Program equips students with the practical knowledge and technical skills required to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate patient care across a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, medical laboratories, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, physicians’ offices, and community health facilities. Patient care technician programs commonly prepare students in direct patient care, vital signs, phlebotomy, electrocardiography (ECG), infection control, and clinical support skills through classroom, laboratory, and supervised clinical training.

Throughout the 12-month program, students receive extensive instruction in essential areas of healthcare practice, including medical front office procedures and patient charting, vital signs measurement and patient monitoring, phlebotomy and specimen collection, ECG fundamentals, infection prevention and control, patient safety, and CPR certification. In addition to developing technical competence, students strengthen their communication, professionalism, ethical decision-making, teamwork, and customer service skills that are highly valued by employers throughout the healthcare industry.

Learning takes place through a combination of classroom lectures, simulation exercises, skills laboratories, and supervised clinical placements, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real healthcare environments. This balanced approach ensures graduates develop both the confidence and competence required to provide exceptional patient care while understanding the importance of empathy, confidentiality, and patient-centered service.
